📈 Trend 1: AI Guardrails Take Shape as Student Safety Concerns Grow
Schools are still figuring out where AI fits in education, but concerns about how students are using the technology are leading to new restrictions and safeguards.
New York City and Los Angeles, the nation’s two largest school districts, have both put new limits on student use of generative AI. Microsoft also announced new safety and privacy standards for its AI products used in schools, while California enacted new protections governing children's interactions with AI and social media.
Schools are also seeing new concerns tied to how students use AI, from teens turning to chatbots for mental health and emotional support to AI-generated content involving students and educators, including the recent "Cat in the Hat" social media trend.

📈 Trend 2: Back-to-School Brings Transportation Safety Into Focus
With students back in school, transportation safety is once again a daily concern for districts, families, and communities. Recent incidents involving school buses, pedestrian safety, and crossing guards are drawing renewed attention to how students get to and from school safely.
Recent reports include a Louisiana school bus crash that sent 19 students to the hospital, two students with special needs reportedly being left on a bus for several hours in Utah, and safety concerns raised by a North Carolina school bus mechanic. Other stories involve illegal passing at bus stops, security aboard buses, and concerns about crossing guard coverage.

📈 Trend 3: School Surveillance Use Raises Questions About Access, Privacy, and Oversight
Recent stories are putting school surveillance issues in the spotlight, from expanding access to camera feeds to concerns about privacy and misuse.
In Michigan, Calhoun County 911 dispatchers can now access school camera feeds during emergencies, while some California parents are pushing for cameras in special education classrooms. In Georgia, students at Alpharetta High School have called for the removal of the district's Flock license plate recognition cameras over privacy concerns.
Recent incidents have also raised questions about surveillance near sensitive areas and who has access to school security footage.
