About School Security Leadership

School Security Leadership is the official publication of the National Council of School Safety Directors (NCSSD), created for and by the professionals who carry one of the most consequential responsibilities in American education: keeping students and staff safe every day.

A Publication of NCSSD

The National Council of School Safety Directors (NCSSD) is the preeminent professional home for school safety leaders. NCSSD advances the profession through credentialing, professional development, advocacy, peer community, and knowledge development.

Through initiatives such as the Foundations of School Safety Leadership (FoSSL) certificate program—the first comprehensive online professional development program created specifically for school safety leaders—member roundtables, webinars, and community discussions, the Council helps practitioners strengthen their expertise, expand their professional networks, and enhance their leadership capabilities.

School Security Leadership is an extension of that mission—a resource that grows with the profession and reflects the collective expertise of its members.

Membership in NCSSD includes full access to School Security Leadership, along with the broader network, educational programming, and resources of the Council.

Our Purpose

This publication exists to serve the working school safety director—the practitioner who needs more than headlines, vendor pitches, and well-meaning policy abstractions.

We believe school safety is a discipline, not a department. The professionals who lead it deserve a publication that treats them accordingly.

School Security Leadership provides practical intelligence, peer insights, and professional development resources across the full spectrum of school safety and security leadership, including:

  • Threat assessment and behavioral intervention
  • Emergency operations planning and drill design
  • Physical security and access control
  • Security technology and emerging tools
  • Law enforcement and community partnerships
  • Policy, legislation, and regulatory compliance
  • Workforce development and career advancement

  • Lessons learned from incidents and near-misses

We go beyond awareness to analysis, helping school safety leaders understand not just what is happening in the field, but what it means and what to do about it.

Our Editorial Commitment

School Security Leadership is editorially independent. Our coverage is driven by the needs and expertise of practitioners—not vendor interests, political agendas, or the news cycle.

We publish original reporting, expert commentary, practitioner perspectives, and case studies that help school safety leaders make informed decisions. We are committed to evidence-informed practice and intellectual honesty. When the research is clear, we say so. When it is contested, we say that too.

We are committed to serving the professionals responsible for protecting schools by providing practical, credible, and actionable information that supports their work.
