New School Safety Directors Share Challenges and Lessons Learned
NCSSD members share lessons on building relationships, understanding district culture, and navigating the challenges of a new school safety leadership role.
Taking on a school safety leadership role often means learning much more than a district's emergency plans and security procedures.
During a recent National Council of School Safety Directors (NCSSD) Hot Topic Discussion, members shared their experiences entering school safety leadership roles, implementing new initiatives, working with district leadership and school boards, and engaging students, families, and the broader school community.
The conversation highlighted several recurring challenges for leaders who are new to a district or to school safety leadership, including understanding organizational structures and decision-making processes, building relationships with principals and other district leaders, and adapting communication to the school environment.
Members also discussed the importance of learning a district's culture before trying to make significant changes. Strategies shared during the discussion included attending school board meetings and district events, meeting individually with school leaders, understanding existing communication protocols, and identifying opportunities to build support for safety initiatives.
