School safety has evolved into a specialized leadership discipline. Today's school safety directors and coordinators are expected to oversee emergency planning, physical security, threat assessment, safety committees, training, crisis response, and much more. Yet many professionals enter these roles without a standardized body of knowledge designed specifically for school safety leadership.
The Foundations of School Security Leadership (FoSSL) course was developed by the National Council of School Safety Directors (NCSSD) in collaboration with experienced school safety practitioners who bring decades of combined K-12 safety and security experience. The self-paced online course provides a comprehensive introduction to the core competencies school safety leaders need to effectively lead safety and security programs.
Designed for both new and experienced school safety professionals, the curriculum includes nine instructor-developed lessons that provide practical frameworks, shared language, and actionable strategies grounded in leading practices. Participants complete the course at their own pace and earn a certificate after successfully completing the final assessment.
